Hmm . . .

As it usually happens with things like these, events suddenly sprout up that try to take your focus away.

Two nights recruited to babysit twins, a friend randomly appearing and staying all day and night, I'll admit my routine has suffered. Regardless, I still have managed at least once a day.

Today, however, things will get better. While I'll be distracted with friends and the worst sport ever [bowling- is that even a sport?], nevermind videogames, Competition Try Outs start today. That heralds the start of competition training! And that is always, fortunately, body breaking.

New Weights

Well, I found my 2lb ankle weights to be unsatisfactory and after consulting the internet, two physical fitness teachers, and my senior sensei I moved onto 5lb weights.

Today was my obligatory 'rest' day, in which I only did arm and leg exercises.
Tomorrow morning I'm going to alter my crunch routine in order to hit all areas of my core in the pursuit of that six pack.

My diet, which use to consist of one iffy meal (usually half a bagel) and small junkfood snacks throughout the day is now being up'ed. I'm going to try to keep a schedule of salad for lunch (with soybeans as snacks throughout the day) and hopefully dinner. I refuse, however, to give up soda.

That being said, I noticed a new energy with my martial arts, but I crashed very hard afterwards. . .

The Regime

The Rundown.
Age: 19
Weight: 123.1
Height: 5'2"

First day of training, and I've set up my schedule like so.

Stretiching
Head to knees both legs, full 'butterfly', split reps.
The short term goal here is to be able to touch my nose to my knee in a full split.
The long term goal is to eventually be able to perform the vertical split, in order to maximize kicking distance.

Core
100 crunches, with a one minute rest between every 33.

Arms
100 bicep curls [50 for each arm], weights 5lb.
50 Tricep Extensions [25 for each arm], weights 5lb
Both while in a horse stance.

Legs
10 improvised side leg lifts [chamber, sweep, kick] for each leg.
50 lunges

Once in the morning, once at night. Unfortunately, my diet is horrible and I am well aware I am not giving my body time to recuperate. While I am now trying to eat at least two meals a day (instead of one small one, and small junkfood snacks throughout the day) my goal is to work through my body's protests in an attempt to 'eat bitter'.

Hopefully, this will help prepare me for future pain.

All men have one entrance into life. . .

It is human nature to aspire to fantastic things. We are all capable of vaulting the numerous obstacles that clutch at our ankles and drag us back down to earth. In the end, few truly achieve their life's dream. All it takes is that first step.

It came to my attention recently, under the title of "American Shaolin" that training at the Shaolin Temple is not just something reserved to heroic men in B kungfu movies. Nor is it reserved to zen buddhists, the Chinese, or purely men. I was estatic to find out all this. As a practitioner of martial arts I, like all other martial artists, am constantly looking to improve my style. Nevermind the opportunity for a spiritual retreat like no other. It is my Jerusalem, my Ganges, my Mecca. A place to which I must make pilgrimage.

Of course, I understand that it won't be easy. The fee is $375 per month, not including the niceties of edible food, bus and taxi fare, much less a planet ticket. In total, it would cost at least $5500. I have not a cent to my name that is not currently being dedicated to college tuition.

Further, despite my martial arts, I understand that I am weak and that, as a woman, I am all the more at an advantage. I will begin weighted training in two weeks. Today I will begin speed training, as I hear it is a very large part of Shaolin drills.

This is a memoir of my desire to overcome all obstacles to do something amazing and, with luck and determination, the memoirs of my time training there.

I give myself two years to complete my training and saving, at which time I will be twenty-one. The race is on.
